Salisbury Cathedral – North Cloister project
We’ve designed an installed a hoarding as party of a major renovation project of Salisbury Cathedral’s cloisters. The work, which is expected to last around five years, and come after a larger piece was completed in 2023. There is a need to communicate to visitors what’s going on and also show the stonework that is hidden behind hoardings. We created a design that involved photographing all the Salisbury stonemasons, using cut-outs of them life size. These have accompanying quotations and their personal ‘makers marks’ explaining the nature of their craft and how they feel about it.
This not only gets across the ‘living’ nature of the building, but make it relevant and cover themes of time, climate change, personal stories and craftsmanship. Colours reflect the existing stonework and illustrations go into the detail and intricacy of the carving. Content developed with Maria Blyzinsky from The Exhibitions Team.
